Brad Holland is the University of Virginia Ombudsman and an advocate for fairness. The University Ombudsman is an independent, confidential resource available to assist faculty, staff, and students in resolving problems, complaints, conflicts, and other issues when normal processes and procedures have not worked satisfactorily.

What Services does the Ombudsman Provide?

The Ombudsman will:

  • Listen to you and discuss your problems/concerns, identifying and evaluating with you options to resolve problems.
  • Provide information on resources within the University that may help you.
  • Open avenues of communication, investigate complaints, and gather information.
  • Serve as a neutral party to solve problems and resolve conflict. The Ombudsman does not take sides, but works to achieve fair outcomes.
  • Identify problem areas facing faculty, staff, and students, and recommend changes in University policies and procedures.

Why go to the Ombudsman?

The Ombudsman is Confidential
The Ombudsman will not identify you or discuss your concerns with anyone without your permission. He can arrange private confidential meetings at your convenience.

The Ombudsman is Independent
The Ombudsman works toward resolution of problems based on principles of fairness, regardless of the parties involved.

The Ombudsman is Impartial
The Ombudsman does not take sides. The rights and interests of all parties will receive equal consideration.

See the Ombudsman if you have a problem, concern, or issue and:

  • You don't know where to go for help.
  • You've been there, done that, and gotten nowhere.
  • You are reluctant to go through normal channels for assistance.

University Resources For Students

  • Learning Needs and Evaluation Center (LNEC)
    Provides support services to students with learning disabilities and attention disorders while also providing necessary accommodations to students with identified disabilities.
  • Student Affairs
    Through various offices, provides support and centers of communication to discuss and act upon student concerns. This is an ideal place for students to begin seeking solutions to problems.
  • Office of the Dean of Students
    Provides 24-hour on-call crisis response services to University students. Student life professionals can help students with counseling and adjustment issues, crisis intervention services, and adjudication options.
  • Student Legal Services
    Provides low-cost, confidential legal assistance to University of Virginia students.
  • Medical Student Advocacy Committee
    Responsible for hearing, evaluating, and acting on reports of abuse of medical students.
  • University Mediation Services
    A student-run organization providing mediating services to the community when at least one of the disputing parties is a student or group of students at UVA.
  • University Judiciary Committee
    Handles complaints charging a student or student organization with violations of The Standards of Conduct.
  • Counseling and Psychological Services(CAPS)
    A Student Health full service outpatient Clinic for counseling and psychiatric services including crisis management.
  • Office of African-American Affairs
    Assists the University in providing a welcoming environment and support services for African-American students.

University Resources For Employees

  • The Office of Equal Opportunity Programs
    Addresses discrimination and sexual harassment concerns of faculty, staff, and students.
  • University Employee Relations
    Counsels employees and departments on policy, conflict resolution, grievance procedures, and performance evaluations.
  • Faculty and Employee Assistance Program
    Provides free and confidential services by licensed counselors to all faculty and staff who may be experiencing personal and/or job related difficulties.
  • Employee Councils
    Valuable committees that promote communication between the University and employees. They help present the issues and concerns that employees may have, as well as recommend solutions.
  • Employee Career Services
    Provides career consulting, training and programs for University employees.
  • Faculty Grievance Committee
    Investigates and resolves grievances brought by members of the University faculty against colleagues and/or administrators with whom the complaining party has a professional relationship.
  • General Faculty Council
    Represents the interests of the General Faculty to the University.
  • Women's Center
    Provides free, short term, confidential counseling for all members of the University community covering issues a wide range of personal concerns, including self-esteem, relationships, body image and eating, stress, depression, career indecision, and adjusting to college life.
  • Office of Employee Relations, Health System
    Provides assistance to Medical Center employees to help resolve employment issues.
