Responsibilities of Teaching Assistants and Graders.

 

GRADERS:          Expected Weekly Work Hours:  average 7 to 10.
 
Expected Duties:
 
1. Attend lectures, unless exempted by instructor.
2. Hold review sessions.
3. Take notes in lectures if requested by instructor.
4. Write exam questions, sometimes entire exams if multiple choice which means computer grading.
5. Collect, xerox, and put articles on reserve or take them to copying center.
6. Grade exams and essays.
7. Hold office hours.
 
TEACHING ASSISTANTS: Expected Weekly Work Hours:  average 10 to 12
with 3 or 4 teaching/contact hours.
 
Expected Duties:
 
1. Teach discussion sections and labs without instructor being present.
2. Grade papers, other assignments and tests given in discussion/lab.
3. Attend the lecture or seminar, unless exempted by the instructor.
4. Help in other ways that have been specified by the instructor ahead of time.
5. Hold office hours.
6. Collaborate with instructor on writing of exam questions (the writing of entire exams for the class is not expected).
 
OTHER RELATED DETAILS:
 
1. TAs have significantly more responsibility than graders.
2. Assignment of TAs to particular classes depend on credit hours and enrollment.  For example, Psyc 101 has the largest
enrollment and thus the largest number of TAs.  Classes worth 4 credit hours usually have (a) TA(s) because they have
required discussion sections or laboratories.
3.Usually a TA will have no more than 75 total discussion students or 28 lab students.
